Rick Stotijn received his first lessons at the age of eight and attended the young talent class at the Conservatories of Utrecht and Amsterdam, the latter with Peter Leerdam. He pursued his studies with Quirijn van Regteren-Altena, Peter Jansen, and his own father Peter Stotijn at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he graduated with the highest distinction, subsequently studying with Bazo Paradzik at the Hochschule Freiburg.
Rick won his first prizes at the Princess Christina Competition and the Young Musical Talent Foundation, and received a grant from ‘Excellent Young Musicians’ to attend numerous master classes and courses.
Many solo appearances at home and abroad were soon to follow. Rick was a soloist with orchestras including Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Rotterdam Chamber Orchestra, Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Musicians with whom Rick has appeared in different chamber music settings include Jurgen Kussmaul, Candida Thompson, Malin Broman, Kristine Blaumane, Joseph Breinl, Simon Crawford Philips, Gidon Kremer, Christianne Stotijn, Cecilia Bernardini, Mirsa Adami, Ann Gastinel, Liza Ferschtman, Roby Lakatos, Robert Holl, Cecile Huijnen and Julius Drake.
He is a regular guest at festivals including the Delft Chamber Festival (Liza Ferschtman), the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht (Janine Jansen) and the Lucerne Festival. He has been offered by Concertgebouw Amsterdam a Carte Blanche Series of four chamber music concerts and last season has played together with his sister Christianne and pianist Joseph Breinl numerous trio recitals throughout Europe. Rick is currently principal double bass player with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In March and October 2012 Rick appeared as soloist with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the Double Bass Concerto by Nino Rota and Concerto for violin, double bass and string orchestra by Astor Piazzola, which have been recorded on his second CD for Channel Classics.
Upcoming concerts are with Residentie Orchestra (Bottesini No. 2), Philharmonie Zuid Nederland (Piazzola and Nino Rota) and numerous chamber music projects throughout Europe as for example at Schloss Elmau with Janine Jansen.
Rick is a guest teacher at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Rick performs on a Rafaele & Antonio Gagliano double bass, funded by the National Musical Instrument Foundation.
